ELECTION VOTING

NATIONAL PARTY RETAINS HAMILTON MAJORITY INCREASED The following results of official counts of voting in the General Election are announced in Press Association messages from the headquarters of the electorates concerned:— HAMILTON. The official count of votes polled in the Hamilton electorate, one of the doubtful' seats, resulted as follows:— Mrs. G. H. Ross (National) 6752 J. Granville (Labour) .. 6419 Majority for Mrs. Ross .. 333 The provisional count gave Mrs. Rpss 6113 votes and Mr. Granville 5904, a majority of 209. Additional votes were divided, between the candidates as follows: — Postal votes, Mrs. Ross 219, Mr. Granville 137; absentee votes, 424 and 376; declarations (civilian), nil and 3. TIMARU. Though some soldiers’ votes have not yet been notified, the official count for the Timaru electorate resulted:— Acland (National) .. .. 6444 Carr (Labour) .. • • 6938 Majority for Carr .. • • 494 The provisional count gave Mr. Carr 6406 Votes and Mr. Acland 5848, a majority of 558.

PALMERSTON NORTH. Official figures for the Palmerston North seat are: G. H. O. Wilson (Labour) 7219 A. E. Mansforcl (National) 6305 Majority for Wilson .. 914 The preliminary count gave Mr. Wilson 6453 votes and Mr. Mansforcl 5553, a majority of 900. SYDENHAM. With the largest majority of any candidate at the General Elections, Miss M. B. Howard has been declared'elected by the returning officer (Mr. T. W. Reese) as the first member for the new electorate of Sydenham. The official figures are: M. B. Howard (Labour) 10,037 R. Hunter (National). .. 3.313 Majority for Howard .. 6,724 This is an increase of 427 on the majority declared on the night of the poll. ONEHUNGA. The official count in the Onehunga electorate increases the majority of Mr. A. G. Osborne (Labour) by 191. With some service votes and 27 ex-servicemen’s declaration votes to come, the figures now are:— Osborne (Labour) .. .. 8603 King (National) .. • • 5204 Informal 82 ST. ALBANS. The final result of the voting in the St. Albans electorate is not likely to be declared before Saturday evening at the earliest by the returning officer (Mr. W. V. Morton). On the first count. Mr. C. M. Williams (Labour) led Mr. J. T. Watts (National) by 66 votes, with 1000 votes to come. The scrutiny was half-way completed yesterday afternoon, Mr. Morton said, and he was anxious that it should he completed by to-morrow so that he and his staff could work through Saturday on ■ the orncial count. PARNELL. The returning officer said to-day that the final election result lor Parnell was expected to be available tomorrow. On the provisional count Mr. D. M. Rae (National) led Mr. F. W. Schramm (Labour) by 50 votes.
