Miss P. Nott will return this afternoon from- Christchurch. Nurse E. Purser, who has completed her training at the Grey River Hospital, left to-day for Christchurch: Mr. and Mrs. I. Baird, who have been visiting Mr. and Mrs. H. Lamont, left to-day on return to Hamilton. Passengers on this morning’s express for Christchurch were: Mrs. N. F. Bruhn (for Rangiora), Mrs. J. Troubridge (for Christchurch), Mr. and Mrs. S. Miller (for Christchurch), Mr. A; Mosley (for Christchurch) and Mrs. L. Johnson (for Wanganui). The High Commissioner for New Zealand in Australia, Mr. J. G. Barclay, is paying a short unofficial visit to New Zealand. He has been to Can- * terbury to see his brother, who is in

ill-health, and was in Wellington .yesterday. He will return to Australia next Wednesday.—(P.A.) A man who gave distinguished service in the Royal Navy and later in the R.A.F., Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur Murray Longmore, G.C.8., D. 5.0., will arrive at Auckland by air late this afternoon. Sir Arthur, svhd is a member of the Council of the Overseas League, will tour New Zealand 3 as a guest of the Government. —(P.A.) Reference to the death of Mr. John Crooks, of Greymouth, was made by the Mayor _ (Mr. F. A. Kitchingham) at last evening’s meeting _ of the Westland Provincial Patriotic Council. He said that Mr. Crooks had been an exceedingly active and useful member of the Greymouth Welfare Committee and during the period in which he had acted as secretary of the Returned Services’ Association his work in connection with returning men had been of the utmost value. The council decided to forward a letter of sympathy to Mrs. Crooks and family.
