Record Established at Election

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 4. For the first time in New Zealand’s history, more than 1,000,000 people voted in last week's general election. The outstanding votes, which the Chief Electoral Officer has been advised now total 78,562, bring the 968928 votes recorded in the provisional count up to the record high figure of 1,047,490. No rolls are used in the Maori elections, but the rolls for the 76 European seats contained an aggregate of 1,081,766 names. The provisional count of votes for these electorates totalled 934,230, but the addition of outstanding votes —absentee, postal, seamen and declaration —increases this figure to 1,012,792, which represents 93.6 per the effective voting strength. The percentage of votes cast is also believed to be a record.
