VANGUARD OF EXPEDITION LEAVES .

(Recd. 12.15 p.m.) v NEW YORK, December 2. 1 At Norfolk, Virginia, to-day, Admiral R. E. Byrd, bade farewell to the vanguard of four ships, marking the beginning of history's greatest Antarctic expedition. Four other ships are leaving San Diego later to-day. Admiral Byrd will join the expedition late in January, leaving in either the aircraft carrier Philippines or the ice-breaker Burton Island. The ships sailing to-day will probably reach the Polar ice pack on January 2 ' Admiral Byrd told reporters, that the Antarctic contained an area as big as the United States and Mexico never seen by humans. It contained vast reservoirs of natural resources, including probably enough coal to satisfy the United States requirements for 50 years.
