CYCLING Nominations for 25-Mile Championship
Exceptional interest is being taken in the New Zealand 25-mile road cycling championship, to be conducted by the Gre’ymouth Cycling 'Club on the Greymouth-Hokitika main highway, next Saturday.. Girls' Swimming Record. Jean Crockroft, aged 13, of Invercargill, broke the New Zealand 75 yards junior girls’ backstroke record in a special attempt. Her time was 62 l-ssec. The previous record of 65sec was held jointly by M. Walker, of Southland, and N. Payne, of Otago. —(P.A.)
Pastor Niemoller. Pastor Martin Niemoller, who was a U-boat leader in the First World War but who spent the Second World War in a Nazi concentration camp, is to visit Britain as the guest of the Bishop of Chichester.-—London, November 1.
PROPOSED TOUR OF NEW ZEALAND (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 1. The chairman of the management committee of the New Zealand Cricket Council (Mr. D. F. Wanklyn) said at the annual meeting of the council to-night that he would go to Melbourne early in the New Year to confer with the manager of the M.C.C. team, Major R. Howard, regarding the proposed tour of New Zealand by the English team. The M;C.C. had given authority tor the team to be flown to New Zealand and in New Zealand for the fiist time such permission had been given. Much would depend on when the final test in Australia ended. Reference was made at the meeting to the opportunities to be given young cricketers to obtain match play on a large scale with a view to the selection of a team to toui England in 1949. Officers elected were: President, Mr J H Phillips (Wellington); secreta'V Mr. E. E. Luttrell (Christchurch)’ management committee, Messrs. Wanklyn, D. A. Colville, J. L. Kerr, H. M. Taylor, and H. Duncan.
