CRICKET Victoria All Out for 189
Wright Takes Six Wickets for 48 MELBOURNE, Nov. 1. The M.C.C. team added nine runs to its first day’s score of 349 for eight wickets when it resumed its first innings against Victoria to-day. Victoria started badly in a blustery wind, and was dismissed for 189, the English slow bowler, D. V. P. Wright, taking six wickets for 48 runs. L. Hassett was top scorer for Victoria with 57. L. Hutton and C. Washbrook opened the M.C.C. team’s second finnings, and the score was eight for no wicket when play was stopped because of the bad light. Victoria’s opening batsman, K. Meuleman, poked his bat at an off ball and was caught behind point by N. W. D. Yardley. Tamblyn and Harvey went out the same way, being deceived by the flight of Wright’s dropping ball. ■ Harvey was batting well and confidently looking for runs. He batted for 44 minutes and hit three fours. Good Partnership. After lunch Miller and Hassett fought back against good bowling. W. Voce had a long 1 spell. He was slightly under length, the ball occasionally flying and keeping low. Each
batsman met Wright in the last English season while serving overseas, but each handled him gingerly. The pair added 64 in 82 minutes before Miller was caught off the shoulder of h'is bat. He added a valuable, quiet 32 in 82 minutes.
Hassett was just beginning to sparkle in his best style when he mistimed a pull and was easily caught after an artistic innings. He was in for 103 minutes and hit four fours. Johnson was in staunch support, defending soundly and scoring quickly with varied shots. Overthrows off
Voce gave him four. The total, at this stage was 150, the last 50 being put on in 40 minutes. Johnson took charge when Hassett left, swinging Voce for four. A rising ball led to a catch behind. Freer went to a brilliant one-handed catch in the slips. Next ball Voce made a desperate attempt to catch Ring for the hat-trick, but just failed to reach the ball. Wright finished off the innings with three wickets for two runs, giving him a fine six for 48. The wicket was wearing, thus helping the bowlers. Appeal Against Light. The M.C.C. began in dull light. An appeal for a catch behind from Hutton off Johnston was not allowed. The next ball, a hard catch in the slips, was missed. Nine balls had been bowled when an appeal against the light was upheld. There was an attendance of 15,324 and the takings were £llOO. Scores: — • M.C.C. First Innings. L. Hutton, b Johnson 15 C. Washbrook, c Barnett, b Johnston 0 P. A. Gibb, b Ring 22 D. C. S.
