Tidal Wave in the Pacific
(Rec.. 9.40 a.m.) NEW YORK, November 1. A tidal wave, apparently caused by violent earthquakes in the Aleutians, appears likely ,to strike Oahu island at any moment, says the United Press Honolulu correspondent. The tidal wave is expected to be less severe than that which on April 2 killed 173 and left thousands homeless in the Hawaiian islands, but the navy relayed the warning to the police, who put thousands of residents along the beach on the alert. The Fordham University seismograph recorded a violent earthquake, which is thought to be in the Aleutians, at 6.25 a.m. to-day, New York Time. The Georgetown University (Washington) seismograph was similarly affected. A recording lasting two .and a half hours was made at 11.38 p.m. yesterday by the Dominion Observatory seismograph at Kelburn, Wellington. An official stated to-day that the recording was undoubtedly of the Aleutian earthquake, being consistent with an earthquake at that distance and certainly of destructive force. _(P.A.)
