SPORTING COWEN SOUVENIR in favour FOR RICCARTON

Review of the Clip / CodidStes - '■ < '' 1 . J, • .

• :VJ, *■ r :' ‘ '' ' [SPECIAL TO STAR.] CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 1.. . With; the completion .of the Labour Day yyeek r end. „ racing, . interest. in racing, circles Jyiil .be centred.in the forthcdrning contest .for, the New Zealand Cup. to ..be.,decided, bn .the. first day pt the.;Canterbut-y Jockey .Club’s metropolitan meeting , oil .November 23. The first acceptance for the Cup takenjast.week thinned put.the big nomination list,., but 41 horses still remain -in. , These are . drawn from all parts of the Dominion and include most of the best handicap performers. at present in commission in all parts, The ..inclusion of Kindergarten in the list, handled .by the handicapper was not responsible for as much. saying as generally thought to Golden Souvenir, who but forhis half-bro-ther’s. entry would have been topweight at the maximum 9.7. As expected Kindergarten was missing when the first acceptance was made, and Golden Souvenir holds No. 1 position. The latter’s form at Awapuni can be overlooked as he was not able to. handlb the unaccustomed going, encountered there.. His race was described as his worst effort to date. He was in very forward condition when he left Riccarton, and a different perfoririance’can be expected of him on the firm and roomy Riccarton track. First In’s Engagement.

First In is an interesting acceptor. Probably if she fails in the Melbourne Cup, she may be brought home. There will be plenty of time between the Melbourne and the New Zealand Cup to get her back. Signal Officer’s win at Gore,, following on encouraging form at Wingatui early in October, will bring him into favour for the Cup. He was the pre-race favourite last, year, but was not able to start at the meeting because of lameness Soneri is certain to be in keen demand. She has won up to a mile and a quarter, and there is no reason to question her ability to master two miles. Langue d’Or was third in last year’s race, a little over a length away from the winner, Golden Souvenir. He then carried 7.13 and now has 8.3, and is entitled to be one of the early choices. Joygiver has had an excellent record in handicaps, and has been gradually working up to this class. He has given every evidence of staying ability, and his part-owner, Mr. J. Richardson, has made no secret of the fact that, the Man’s Pal gelding will be a formidable candidate. Bridge Acre reads, well with 8.2, but there is not much of her, and a tvyo-mile journey may find a weakness. Young Trent will come into serious discussion as the result of his win at Awapuni, and Chung Chong, second last year, is stated to have given every satisfaction in his preparation to date. Piccolo showed by his win at- Geraldine that he is very well, and as he has won, over a mile and a half, he has to. be considered. Strong Appeal. ✓

Thornbridge failed in the soft going at Awapuni. He has always shown his dislike for such conditions, and can be expected to. be at his best again on his home track. He makes strong appeal among his division. Lord Elgin has proved useful, but may not measure up to this class—not this season, at least. Miss Medley’s good efforts last season, including wins over a mile and a half, and a third placing in the Auckland Cup, pointed to her prospects with 7.3, but her two races m recent weeks have not been encouraging and she will nofi have anothei race before the Cup. Of the seven-stone division, Western Front'makes most appeal. He is a brilliant galloper when in the right mood, and two miles should not be beyond him. There will probably be a further thinning out when the next payment is taken, and the deletion of many of those in the lower division would tend to improve more than affect the strength of the field. A lot may happen between this and Cup day, but in the meantime, the prospects of Golden Souvenu, Soneri, Signal Officer, Thornbridge, and Western Front may be considered most favourable.
