THE WEATHER Forecast: Mainly Fair
The following weather forecast was issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, at noon to-day:— Situation: A ridge of high pressure is moving on to the South Island; a depression is advancing across the northern Tasman Sea.
Forecast to 5 p.m. to-morrow: Moderate, variable winds; southeasterlies predominating tomorrow; weather cloudy to overcast, with occasional showers today; mainly fair to-morrow; temperatures rather cool. Further outlook: Probably showery again. ..LOCAL RECORDINGS 9,a.m.: barometer, 29.71 inches (1006 millibars); thermometer, 51; wind, north-west (light air); sky, overcast with intermittent drizzle; bar, considerable swell; rainfall, 0.10 inches. (The total rainfall to date this year is 90.09 inches). The depth on the bar at high water yesterday was 22ft. 6ins.
Atomic Power Development. The delays in reaching an international agreement on the. control of atomic power are holding back its development for peaceful purposes, said the Chief of the French Atomic
Power Commission, , M. Frederick Joliot Curie, speaking at a conference of French scientists. He. predicted that without such delays atomic power could be harnessed for practical purposes within two years. November 1.
