POWER FOR MINES

BIG DEMAND IN REEFTON AREA NEW SUPPLY* SOUGHT An indication that the Grey Electric Power Board may be embarrassed by the demand for power for coal mines in the Reefton district unless a further supply of power is obtained, was given by the engineer, Mr. S. Trotter, in his report to the monthly meeting of the board last evening. Mr. Trotter stated: “Power for a substantial amount of colliery load has been applied for in the Reef ton district, and it is hoped that the board will be able to make use of a further point of supply on , the main transmission line from Ikamatua to the Cobb river before serious difficulties are experienced in handling the large load building up at the northern end of our area.” Barrytown Extension. The report also stated that the outside staff had been engaged on general maintenance of lines and connecting new consumers. A short extension of low tension line for new consumers had been completed at Rapahoe. Some further, work had been done at Reefton, with some preparatory work, pegging, etc., o* the extension to high tension feeder to supply the Garvey Creek mine on the Maruia road. The work of erecting transformers and connecting four additional sawmills was proceeding. The erection of the extension at Barrytown was proceeding. The connected load for the month was as follows: —Light, previous 2272.975 k.w., present 6.180 k.w., total 2279.155 k.w.: heat, previous 6216.G6 k.w., present 82 k.w., total 6298.66 k.w.; water heat, previous 824.91 k.w., present 10.35 k.w., total 835.26 k’.w.; power, previous 15,811 h.p., present 11 h.p., total 15,822 h.p.; cooking, previous 7363.95 k.w., present 112.65 k.w., total 7476.60 k.w. The load at last meeting was 32,388.670 k.w., and load lor the month was 222.180 k.w., making a total of 32,610.850 k.w. In reply to a question, Mr. Trotter said that some difficulty had been experienced in obtaining staff for work on the Barrytown line, but he did not expect further delays. The report was adopted. Present at the meeting were Messrs. J. B. Kent (chairman), J. Rvan, A. L. McKay, P. Blanchfield, W E Bring, L. M. Downes, W. McGilchrist, J. Mulcare, W. Clayton the secretary (Mr. W. S. McClymont) and the engineer. The resignations of two members of the staff, Messrs. M. R. Anderson (electrician) and W. A. Croudis (linesman) were accepted. Westland Board.

The Westland Electric Power Board advised that the board’s solicitors had been advised that the Westland. Board owed the Mines Department nothing and that the department had been asked for a certificate to that effect.
