INCREASED RATIONS
PLANS FOR BRITISH AND AMERICAN ZONES BERLIN, Sept. 19. A British Military Government spokesman said it had been hoped today to announce increases in the rations in the British and American zones beginning in October but a final decision was being withheld until the full effect of the United States maritime strike were known. The spokesman said- better organisation would be applied to the food and fuel problems in the coming gwinter, "but Germans in the British zone could not expect more than the monotonous and barely sufficient diet for some months. He added that the lowered resistance of Germans after the year of privation was likely to offset the effects of the slight improvement in the food supplies.
Nationality Bill. The right of a British woman on marriage to a foreigner to retain her British nationality, and of a foreign woman on marriage to a British subject to apply for British nationality, is preserved by the British Nationality and Status of Aliens (in New Zealand) Amendment Bill, which was introduced and read for the first time in the House of Representatives yesterday.—(P.A.) School Cafeterias Recommended. Cafeterias in all schools were recommended by . the New Zealand Secondary School Boards’ Association meeting in Wellington. Mrs. Knox Gilmer, Wellington Colleges’ Board, said that children away from home for long periods needed hotdrinks, balanced lunches, and a place where they could eat and drink. The chief inspector of post-primary schools, Mr. E. Caradus, said he sympathised with the motion. When the present building difficulties had been overcome he would like to see a start made in the country, where pupils travelled many miles to consolidatedschools.
