FERTILISER SUPPLY

IMITtOVEMENT EXPECTED (P.’A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 19. Three shipments of basic slag totalling 10,000 tons were expected in New Zealand from Belgium within the next month or so, said the superintendent of fertilisers to the Department of Agriculture (Mr. G. H. Holford) today. These will be the first shipments since the war, and the towage has all been sold ahead.

However, negotiations were in train, said Mr. Holford, for greater quantities to be shipped next autumn. The first shipment of Nauru phosphate was to arrive at- Auckland today. This was the first’ of 65,000 tons due up to June next year, 'though the allocation of phosphate to New Zealand from Makatea, North Africa, and America would be about 370.000 tons. An improvement in the fertiliser position should be noted from now op, said Mr. Holford. Nauru’s output from 1946-47 to 1949-50 was expected to increase steadily from about 200,000 tons to 1,000,000 tons.
