HOCKEY Final Competition Games To-morrow

The final matches of the West Coast Hockey Association’s competition for the Burnett White Cup will be played at the Recreation Ground to-morrow. The competition has been closely contested, the points being: Marist and Greymouth 12, Pacific 11, Cobden .10, Cobden Rangers 8, Wheelmen 1. A win by Marist or Greymouth to-mor-row will give it the championship but other possibilities have to be considered. It was decided -at this week’s meeting of the Association that in the event of a defeat for Pacific against Cobden Rangers and a draw at fulltime in the match between Marist and Greymouth an extra five minutes each way will be played. The result still being a draw Marist and Greymouth will be joint holders of the Burnett White Cup. Mr. W. E. Newton presided at the meeting. Others present were Messrs R. Pascoe, M. Newton, V. Messenger, I. Burn, R. Beckman and L. P. Coffey (secretary-treasurer). It was decided that two teams should travel to Christchurch on September 27 to play matches against Canterbury teams. Messrs W. Newton and j. Horrack were appointed managers of the teams. A letter was received from the Trinity Club, Christchurch, regretting that September 28 was too late for a match against Greymouth and that the game be left over until next season. < The following teams to participate in to-morrow’s matches, have been announced: — Greymouth Club. .Best (2), England, Kendon, Atkinson, Bradley, Swinburne, Tones (2), Emmerson, Simon, Newton (2). Acceptance of the terms of New Zealand’s invitation for a team from' the Combined Services in India to tour New Zealand next year was received at a meeting of the management committee of the New Zealand Hockey Association last night in a letter from General Headquarters of the Indian Army. The team will comprise six officers 'from the Royal Indian Navy, Army, and Air Force, and 12 other ranks. The name of the manager, the letter stated, would be announced as soon as the Commander-in-Chief had approved the appointment. , The team would arrive in New Zealand before the end of May, 1947, provided suitable shipping was available. . Blue Herons at Hokitika A flock of seven blue herons recently made their home near the ' Hokitika river, on the banks of the 1 Mahinapua creek. It is reported, that 1 five of the birds appear to be young 1 ones, and may have been hatched ; out near the outlet of the creek.
