WESTPORT SHIPPING STATISTICS FOR AUGUST

During August 26 steamers and one auxiliary sailer, representing a tonnage of 12,715, entered the port of Westport. Twenty-seven steamers and one auxiliary vessel sailed from the port during the month, the tonnage being 12,323, making the total tonnage for the month 25,038. Mean high water in the river was 24ft and on the bar 23ft 3in. These depths were the most satisfactory for a long time. The output of coal from the mines in the harbour endowment area totalled 39,217 tons, . while sundry other companies outside tne area nroduced 3214 tons. The amount of coal" shipped from the port was 35,135 k tons, being the fourth greatest total for any month of the year. The amount of timber shipped during the month—2B7,ooo superficial feet—was the largest for any month of the year, and 80,000 feet more than in May, 1945, when the previous highest total was shipped. GOLF TOURNAMENT. The South Island tournament of the Licensed Victuallers Association was concluded at Westport on Tuesdain the retailers’ section E. Holder (Westport) won the medal match. Keell (Christchurch) 79 8 —7l tied for first place, with A. Pain’ (Westport), 84, 12—72, in second place. D. L. Woon (Christchurch) won the senior visitors’ cnampionship, and F. D. Jones (Christchurch) won the visitors’ junior title. The visitors driving competition was won by R. B. Carr (Auckland), and the putting competition by A. E. Grubb (Christchurch). The visitors’ fourball bogey was won by C. F. Schadick and C. Petersen (Westport), with a card ot 7 up. The trade fourball bogey was won by L. J. Moorhouse and A. C. Keell (Christchurch), 4 up, from A. Pain (Westport) and G. D. Varnham (Lyttelton), 3 up. The retailers’ championship was won by A. H. Stevenson, who won the While Horse Cup.
