SPORTING Quiet Morning at Riccarton

Preparing for Geraldine Meeting [SPECIAL TO STAR.] CHRISTCHURCH, September 17. As most of the horses engaged at the Geraldine fixture next Saturday had a race at Ashburton last Saturday, there was very little fast work at Riccarton to-day, and this was confined mostly to short sprints. Burberry, and Pink Bird were companions over four hurdles, the latter giving a clean display, but Burberry only scrambled, over the last two fences, and was inclined to stop at both. He will require a ’ lot of strenuous schooling before he will fake kindly to a. jumping career. Battle Chief and Big Top were given a similar task, both shaping satisfactorily. The former shows promise as a jumper, and should soon make a return on the 55 guineas paid for him at the Grand National sale last month. Big Top is a bold jumper at times, but mixes good with bad efforts. Double Cross made a bold showing for over a mile in the Ashburton Handicap, and as he should benefit from the race, he must be seriously considered for the Geraldine Cup, in which he has 7.4: Regal Lily was going »well in the first division of the Novice Stakes when she was forced on to the rails and was squeezed back to a rear position. This Royal Chief—Moordower filly has improved a lot in recent. weeks. Improving Filly. Grand Melefe has been fairly disappointing in many of her races by her inability to get away on favourable terms. She left the mark reasonably well in the first division of [lie Novice Stakes at Ashburton, and although she had no chance with the winner, Le Sonnet, she comfortably beat the remainder. Palomino ran a satisfactory race at Ashburton, her first for some months. This speedy filly, owned by Mrs. J. Freitas, of Greymouth, and trained at Riccarton by R. Wilson, will win races later in the season, and in the meantime will be a likely proposition at the Geraldine fixture. Robingay ran one of his usual consistent races in the second division of the Novice Stakes at Ashburton, and was a little unlucky in being checked about a furlong from home by the winner, Penetrate, who turned for home wide out. When straightened up, Penetrate ran across to Robingay who was hugging the rails, and bumped into him before his rider could again get him on to a straight path. Penetrate won so easily that he would probably have won in any case, but Robingay was nevertheless put out of his stride. Solid Effort. The Robin Goodfellow filly Rahine was responsible for another solid effort is being runner-up to Privilege in the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton. She appeared to have her head in front of Privilege inside the final furlong, but could not carry on as well as her rival. Rahine is a sister to the Avondale Stakes winner Fellowship, for whom Mr. C. C. Davis, owner of Rahine, was the under-bidder at 1950 guineas at the Trentham sales. Detain was one of the expensive favourites to fail at Ashburton. He was slow away in the Penscroft Hack Handicap and was never in the picture.

The former North Island gelding Turf Topic (by Safari) was prominent during the middle stages of his race at Ashburton, but was a good way back at the finish. His new owner decided on a change of stables after the race, and the gelding is now one of J. Wadley’s team. "Carry On, by Coronach from La Plata, trained by C. B. Dawson for Mr. C. C. Davis, is to be taken to Wingatui to race on the second day of the meeting. His stable mate, a colt by The Greek from Welcome Vaals, has indicated that he will require more time, and it is probable he will not be asked to race as a two-year-old. Back in Form. Centime has been recommissioned by C. Fairman. She carries a lot of surplus condition, and some time will elapse before she resumes racing. Centime’s sister, Derene, trained by E. J. Jennings, was not able to race at Ashburton because of a recurrence of her leg trouble, which restricted her activities last season. Derene is to be given sea-water treatment, which proved beneficial on previous occasions. The speedy six-year-old mare Legal Rose has been put into work again by E. Kingan after a lengthy spell. Legal Rose had a run of successes at West Coast meetings last season, and was sold at a high figure. She, however, failed to carry on for her new owner, but she has come in from her respite in excellent order, and may make amends this term. Return to Wingatui. J. A. Wilson passed through Riccarton to-day with Piccolo and Listen In on his way to Wingatui. He has been training at Levin for the past two years, but has decided to return to Wingatui. He also took the three-year-old filly, Lorna Leigh, a halfsister tq Leigh Barton, with him to train for her Christchurch owner.

Treasurer Appointed. Mr. W. E. J. Steei- has been appointed treasurer of the Greymouth Trotting Club. He succeeds Mr. J. Steel who was elected president of the club at the annual meeting. Grey mouth Jockey Chib Election Interest in Greymouth Jockey Club affairs is indicated by the nomina-tion-of 14 members for the 12 positions on the committee, which will be elected at the annual meeting of the club next week. Only one nomination, that of the retiring president, Mr. T. E. Coates, has been received for the position of president. Record Claimed in New ■ . York NEW YORK, September 17. Polynesian, the winner of the 1945 Preakness Stakes, equalled the world’s record of 1.9 1-5 for six furlongs when he won the Pageant Handicap at Atlantic City, carrying

9.0. Clag set the record in Cincinnati in 1935. The above claim is erroneous, as the time was bettered by Irish Note when he won the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton last November in 1.9, which time now stands as the New Zealand record, for six furlongs: In Australia Aurie’s Star ran six furlongs at Flemington in I.B{-.
