MR. WEBB’S CAREER
TRIBUTE BY COLLEAGUE (P A ) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 16. In a tribute to the part played by Mr P C. Webb in the industrial and political life of the Dominion, the Minister of Works, Mr. Semple, said this morning that he legietted exceedingly Mr- Webb’s approaching retirement from public life, for they had been intimately associated for 40 years. Mr. Semple recalled that he knew Mr. Webb first when he was a versatile young man in the mines on the West Coast. They, together with the late Mr. P. H. Hickey, had drafted the constitution of the old Federation of Labour and later Mr. Webb was the first Labour man nominated for a Parliamentary election under the party’s old constitution. When Mr. Webb was successful he was the first Labour man to enter the House of Representatives under the party’s new set-up. “I am sorry he has had to retire and I will miss him more than any pal I have ever had in Parliament, because we grew up together in the struggle.” said Mr. Semple.
