Sunday Sport and Concerts

[TO THE EDITOR.] . Sir, —In reply to the Rugby-mind-ed “Not a Wowser,” I think his age is his main reason for this sudden attack of very deep religious fervour. Those heathen miners, wharf workers and League footballers should take heed. But then of course they are not 58 and approaching pension day. Statistics show that in the Englishspeaking countries little more than five per cent, of the people are church-goers. To me it seems that the five per cent, has a great deal to say on what we shall do. As one of the 9a per cent. I don’t object to their haying their beliefs, or even to their having a good share of the broadcasting hours .and newspaper space, but I do think it is a bit thick when they (the five per cent.) push on and condemn a class of workers and sportsmen. So, workers, get out of the mines, get off the wharves and away from ships and above all, don t play League football for there lies not the road to salvation.—Yours etc., I SUNDAY FREEDOM. Runanga, Sept. 16.

[TO THE EDITOR.] Sir—ln. ’reply to “Not a Wowser” I would like to suggest that he has spent the last 20 years of his. fife like Rin Van Winkle and, when he wakes up, maybe he will notice the changes that have taken place. With ieference to his remarks regarding a race of “infidels,” I would pomt out that during the war with Hitlerite Germany, fame and honour were won by the ability and courage of the infidels,” due in part to previous tactical training and discipline with football clubs. To ensure peace for the future a high physical standard is essential, and when a man labours six days a week, Sunday is the only day he has left for training or relaxation. “Not a Wowser” , states that we are fast losing the good name won by our hospitality. Did he ever speak to any members of the Indian hockey team, South African team, and the English League team? As for his smiling at the “cream of the world in football, one wonders that he can smile at all. Also, would he please explain how football comes to be classed as a “natural vice,” even if played on Sunday? In conclusion, I would ask “Wee MacGregor” to give (or sell) “Not a Wowser” a large bottle of “Scotch” to put him to sleep for another 20 years. —Yours, etc., TIME MARCHES ON.
