HELPED THE BOSS

STAFF DOES DIRTY WORK AT USUAL PAY

DUNEDIN, August 9

Three weeks holiday on full pay or three weeks’ dirty work for the boss at no extra remuneration, just to help him out? That question was decided spontaneously and unanimously by the 120 employees of a local manufacturing concern this week and as a result the concern and an insurance company will be saved many thousands of pounds. Following the Dominion Manufacturing Company fire last Tuesday, when the employees arrived on Wednesday they were told they could take time off on pay, which was covered by a blanket policy, until the plant could resume. Instead the machinists, cutters, finishers etc., all volunteered to clean up the mess and did so. The dirty work included the clearing of glass and scrubbing. As a result the company will be able to resume operations within 21 days of the fire. Paying a tribute to the staff, the manager, Mr. H. M. Sutherland, said it 'was an illuminating example of how employer-employee relations could be worked satisfactorily.
