SUPPLIES FROM AMERICA

NEW ZEALAND ORDERS LARGE CONSIGNMENT

FIRST SHIPMENT EN ROUTE

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 9. The first shipment of a large consignment of building timber from the United States and Canada is en route to New Zealand. In all'more than 28,000,000 board feet of Oregon pine,.west-; ern red cedar and American redwood has been ordered with the consent of the New Zealand Government. Regular shipments are expected to follow the first delivery.

The decision to make the purchase was reached after discussions between the New Zealand Timber Merchants’ Federation and the State Forest Service. The Government authorised the issue to the federation of a licence to import more than 28,000,000 feet of Canadian and United States timber. The value of the licence is expected to exceed £lO,000,000, New Zealand currency. The first supplies are expected to reach the Dominion within a few weeks. The timber ordered includes 15,000,000 feet of redwood and a quantity of American sugar pine. This imported timber will help considerably in relieving the demand for high-class joinery timbers, allowing the New Zealand timbers which now go into joinery to be used for other building purposes.
