MINERS’ HOLIDAYS

N.S.W. RAILWAYS FACE COLLAPSE i STRIKES AND NO RESERVES SYDNEY, August 6. The New South Wales railways face complete collapse at the end of the year if the miners take their annual holidays. This warning was given by the Prime Minister (Mr. Chifley) when he conferred with officials of the Labour Council and transport unions. A spokesman for the deputation said that even if every miner worked every day between now and the mine holidays, which were 20 weeks away, stocks could not be built up to carry industry over the holiday period. More than 200 Q mine workers today turned a deaf ear to urgent appeal.l; for increased production. The output loss was 8000 tons of coal. Last night the general secretary of the Miners’ Federation appealed to all miners to step up production in return for the benefits to be received by the Government Coal Bill.
