NEW RADIO STATION
DELAY LIKELY IN DELIVERY OF EQUIPMENT
DETAILS OF PROPOSALS . Details concerning the proposal to establish a new five or 10 kilowatt radio station on the West Coast, probably in the vicinity of Greymouth, were supplied by the Minister of Broadcasting, Mr Jones, in a letter to the Westland District Progress League which met last night, As well as new equipment, the Minister indicated that new studios would be eventually erected. The -final scheme providing for the erection of studios at Greymouth, said /the Minister, would be commenced as soon as the necessary labour and building material became available. In the meantime, it was proposed to instal the new equipment for the studio in the existing premises. The housing of the transmitter would be temporarily arranged so that the station could operate as soon as possible without placing any additional strain on the buildingresources of the community. '‘Tenders are being called immediately for the equipment,” he continued, “but the experience of the New Zealand Broadcasting Service when letting contracts recently, has been that overseas manufacturers require approximately 18 months before they’ can supply the goods. The present transport arrangements are also difficult, so it will probably be some time. before the necessary equipment will be available for installation.”
“With reference to the offer made to the Director of Broadcasting by Mr Eadie of a small short-wave transmitter, the Minister advised that the equipment was not designed for broadcasting frequencies, but for short-wave transmission, and would be quite unsuitable for broadcasting without radical alterations which would be costly and in the end the transmitter would cost much more than a new one.
Acting on a recommendation from the Transport and. Communications Committee, it was decided to thank the Minister and to suggest that he expedite the calling of tenders for the equipment., and also to urge that early delivery be made.
