BREAD RATIONING
REACTION OP BRITISH BAKERS [N'.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent.] LONDON. August 5. Ah official indication of the reactions of bakers throughout Britain to a fortnight of bread rationing is available from replies to questionnaires sent out by the National Association of Master Bakers. The replies represent the views of about 5300 bakerr,, and indicate a 100 per cent, effort to operate the scheme. About 50 per cent, of the bakers say that in spite of genuine efforts they have been unable to collect all the. coupons. The majority say that during the first week they disposed of surplus bread either by selling it "of! the ratiop” or by disposing of it as pig food. Many remarked that Mlnisiry of Food officials seemed more confused and less, well-inform-ed of the scheme than the bakers themselves. On most of the forms were references to assistants and roundsmen leaving, to signs of strain and restlessness among the bakers’ staffs, and to long hours of overtime.
