Eire has applied for membership of the United Nations. Applications from Albania, Outer Mongolia, Afghanistan, and Transjordan are already under consideration by the Security Council Committee, which must report to the council. The Portuguese Ambassador in Washington (Dr. J. Debianchi) announced that Portugal had applied for membership of the United Nations.—New York, August 3.
Power Supply in N.S.W. The Premier of New South Wales (Mr. W. J. McKell) has announced that the Government has decided to introduce a £6,000,000 plan for the extension of electricity supplies to 24,000 farmers and 10,000 other users' in rural areas. The plan, he said, would be completed in 10 years. It would be administered by local government distributing authorities, who would receive subsidies from the Government.—Sydney, August 3,
