RUSH TO MARRY
GERMAN GIRLS SEEKING BRITISH HUSBANDS SEQUEL TO LIFTING OF BAN (Rec. 2 p.m’) LONDON, Aug. 4. German girls are flocking to the British section of Berlin from the United States zone, taking advantage of the lifting of the ban against marriages with British soldiers, reports Stars and Stripes at Frankfurt. The paper quotes one girl as saying: “Germany won’t be a good place to live until I am an old woman. I would rather go to another country. The only way is to marry a British soldier.”
The Daily Telegraph’s correspondent at the Rhine Army headquarters says that a steady stream of applicants is expected in the next few weeks, but the total is likely to be only small in proportion to the thousands of Britons in Germany. Commanding officers, before permitting marriages, will have the delicate task of considering the suitability of the match. Young soldiers may be given a chance of going to England for a short spell to consider in normal surroundings the importance of the proposed step. German girls welcome the concession, especially in Berlin, where they outnumber men by six to one.
