BUILDING TRADES
BRITISH CRAFTSMEN FOR AUSTRALIA FIRST GROUP IN DECEMBER (Rec. 11.45 a.m.) ’ MELBOURNE, August 5. • The first group of the 1000 building trade craftsmen and labourers from Britain is expected to arrive in Australia in December. The tradesmen, who will be the first to be brought in under the Federal Government’s immigration scheme, will work on the mass ■ production of homes. Eight hundred are expected to arrive early in December. The Minister of Immigration,' Mr Calwell, said many men would bring their families to Australia later. They would be housed in former service barracks until accommodation could be found closer to their jobs. In an earlier statement Mr Calweh said no immigration agreement had been concluded with Eire and none was contemplated. Maltese would be considered before citizens of Eire, as the Maltese were British subjects.
