The Amateur Theatre
[TO THE EDITOR.] Sir,—l notice that the Greymouth Operatic Society is this month venturing out on its second effort in the amateur theatrical world with the presentation of “Our Miss Gibbs.” It seems to me that local amateurs are not fully appreciated by comparison with the importation, whether it be a flesh-and-blood show or the pictures? Very few realise the hard work entailed 'and sacrifices made in the production of such shows. There should be some hundreds of honorary members, but I doubt if there are 100 financial members. I would also like to suggest to the R.S.A. that in building its new hall, etc., it should make ample provision for local organisations to promote concerts and plays. I am sure that in so doing it would have a most profitable scheme as well as filling a long-felt want in a town that should have been more progressive and enterprising over the past years than it has been. Talent is not lacking here. —Yours, etc., LOVER OF THE THEATRE. Greymouth, August 2.
