DOMINION NEWS DEATH OF BOY WHO SWALLOWED A PENNY

Some nine months after he had swallowed a penny, which X-ray examinations failed to disclose, a young boy, who became ill at school on Tuesday, has died in the Green Lane Hospital, Auckland. He was John Kenneth North, aged seven, of Mount Wellington. A post mortem examination w as performed by the pathologist at the Auckland Hospital. This revealed that the penny was lodged in one of the boy’s bronchial tubes. — (P.A.)

Wrens Finish Duties. As from to-day Wrens employed m Wellington will finish their duties, with the exception of a group of 10, who are being retained to prepare the hostel for handing back to the authorities. They, too, will be disbanded on August 15. On October 31 the last of the Wrens still serving in the Dominion will be demobilised. Miss Ruth Herrick, 0.8. E. Director of the W.R.N.Z.N.S., will relinquish her post in October and will return, to civil life. At the peak there were 518 Wrens serving in the Dominion. None .saw service overseas. The only ones to go abroad were those selected to go with the Victory contingent, who are now on their way back lo New Zealand. — (P.A.)

The Passport Bill, which was introduced and read a first time in the House of Representatives, yesterday, provides for the issue of passports by New Zealand representatives overseas. The bill also empowers the Minister of Internal Affairs, or any authorised person, to take and retain possession of any British passport in any case where he has good reason to believe that the passport is in the wrongful possession of any person, or that the passport; or a renewal or endorsement or visa has been obtained by means of false representation. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr. Parry) said ho difficulties were placed in the way of a British subject coming into or leaving New Zealand. Passports were formerly issued by consuls in various countries, but to facilitate administration power was now being taken to appoint our representatives ' overseas to issue them. — (P.A.)
