Red Glare’s Good Display

Smart Sprint by Bonny Flight [SPECIAL TO STAR.] CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 1. ' Indian Sign and Red Glare were to have been companions in a round of the main steeplechase fences this morning, but it evidently deemed advisable not to risk jumping the former on account of his unsoundness. and Red Glare was sent over the inside schooling fences. Ridden by J. 'Williamson, he gave his usual finished display over 10 fences, and although he has a big weight for one of his class, on Saturday he must be conceded a favourable chance against the moderate opposition offering. Bonny Flight was again responsible for the Smartest sprint over half . a mile to-day, and on ground to. her liking, she will be a dangerous Winter Cup candidate. Findon was given his first serious work this morning since he arrived at Riccarton, and He moved freely throughout a useful mile . on ; the course proper. He appears to be in more advanced racing condition than on previous visits, and may surprise in the Winter Cup, in which he will be‘ ridden by W. Ensor. Arabian Night. Arabian Night was given some easy work on the course proper this morning, and although he still showed si "ns of soreness behind, he is much* 5 improved. It has been decided, however, not to take any risks with him, and he will not contest the Jumpers’ Flat Race on Saturday. Brantome attracted notice by the manner in which he cleared four hurdles to-day. . He is undoubtedly a bold galloper and brilliant jumper, and should he show up in the Jumpers’ Flat Race on Saturday, he will be one of the favourites for the Grand National Hurdle Race. Belle Leonne is an unlikely starter in the Winter Cup, and A. Stokes has become available to ilde Dash o Dink. The latter gelding will now contest the Cup in preference to the Paparua Handicap. A decision whether Night Prince is to start in the Enfield or Grand National Steeplechase had not been ' arrived at to-day. If in the former, he is certain to dispute favouritism with Golden Glow. The hurdle horseman J. Winder ■ ’ was admitted to hospital yesterday ’ suffering from a badly injured ’ shoulder sustained when Bronze ' Night fell, with him yesterday, and he" will not be available to ride on ’ Saturday. ■! Enfield Steeples. Roman Ned was going well when • he fell at the second to last fence • in the hack steeplechase at the 1 Christchurch Hunt meeting, and this • would point to his prospects in the ’ Enfield Steeplechase on Saturday. 1 He is a six-year-old gelding by Haz- , rat and is trained at Onehunga, so • that he has made a long trip south. The Raker did not go far enough • last Saturday to give an idea of his I chance over the Riccarton countiy, I and the fact that he stopped at the i top brush in Wednesday's schooling - task does not favour his prospects : lof getting round on Saturday. ■I ■ Lady. Premier is trained, by the ] veteran trainer of jumpers, L. Knapp, ' of Awapuni, but she does not look ■: likely to do the stable any service i. at the National meeting. She shaped i poorly yesterday and bled duiing the '• journey, while to-day she ran off at ithe double when schooling over the inside country, and fell at the sod wall. • < Cashmere Plate. The Cashmere Plate is for threer year-olds that, at time of starting, ' have not won a.race. There will be 1 a big field, and several of the contestants have had placed perform- ■ ances to their credit. These include ' Fort Silver, Grand Melee, Indian 1 Dawn, Spring Water, Antibes, and Bonnie Fair. Queen’s General diewj : attention to his smartness by bis close • second placing to Special Flight last Saturday, and .Spring Water ran third ■ to Hart Royal and Robingay. Grand i Melee will' represent the Chokebore I stable, whose other candidate. Hart ■ Roval, became ineligible by his win ’ last week. Grand Melee is a bay ’ filly by Battle Song from the speedy ' Fracas, and in her second start last season'was second to Graeme in the Autumn Nursery at Riccarton aftei • coming from a long way back. Indian ' • Dawn drew attention to her chance > by her finishing on into fourth place - last week. She is by Nizami and a > high opinion is held of her. Bonnie 1 Fair is trained at Trentham by P. ■ Burgess, and is by Defoe, and Antibes 1 is by Croupier from Latin Lady ana > comes from Oamaru. Antibes had 1 two seconds in three starts last sea- • son. . ? Jumpers’ Flat. Several of those engaged in the Jumpers’ Flat on Saturday will be J entitled to serious consideration. ’ Prize Ring won a mile and three furi longs open race at Washdyke at his t last start, and, has since been the 5 pre-post favourite for the Grand ; National Hurdle Race. The Monarch, : Blue Title, Bramble Song, Hunting ■ Mac Slavonik, and Arctic Dawn , have been recent winners, and ■ Sphere has been racing fairly consistently. The last-named won the ■ 1

important Islington Handicap at the National meeting last year, and in June won an open hurdle race at Wingatui. Brantome has shown a lot of pace over sticks, and ran third in a mile-and-three-furlong hack race recently. Bettermusk comes from Paeroa, and .had two wins and two thirds in his last four starts. Some smart sprinters will be seen out in the Paparua Handicap. If started in this in preference to the Winter Gup, Whitley will be entitled to strong support, as he is certain tobe in front from the early stages, and seven furlongs will suit him better. Bridge Acre has been sprinting well in recent weeks. She thrives on an easy preparation, and has always raced well first, time up. Interest will attach to Karachi’s effort, as he shares with Julius Caesar' the honour of being the only three-year-olds in the race. He is a grey gelding by Nizami from Sharmin, a halfsister" by Bulandshar to Grand Forest, and won two races last season. Julius Caesar is by Beaulivre, and won one race. v. Grill’s Chance. Grill was accepted for in the Paparua Handicap in preference to the Winter Cup, and with the benefit of last Saturday’s race, he will be a., formidable candidate. The best of the lightweights may be Sedgemere, who looks like being very useful this season. Olga’s Choice will have a chance to prove his ability in the Trial Hurdle Race, for which the Hastings candidate, Glad Fox, will probably be favourite'. The latter has had two second placings recently and is considered on the up-grade all the time. Beneve won'at his last start and Big Top has raced fairly consistently. Lord Elgin will be ridden by W. Broughton in the Avonhead Hack Handicap. With his trainer in the saddle last week, Lord Elgin was set a severe task out in front all the way, and was then only beaten in the last few strides. Smart Hack. There will be a lot of interest in Alamode’s appearance. A four-year-old by Salmagundi, he won two races last season in Southland in an easy manner, and he is regarded, in the south as something above the ordinary. Burnbrae was not on, hand last Saturday, and following his win at Washdyke last month, he will be one of the favourite division. Persuade, a stable-mate of Red Glare, is a four-year-old filly by Coronach from Oratory, and has a win and two third placings in her last three staits. Others likely to race prominently in.clude Tifox, Deep Harmony, Foreign Ways, Quadrille, and Gallimaufry. Swift Quarry was withdrawn from the Winter Cup at 9.50 to-day, and he and Airport are to be returned to Ellerslie. The latter was injured when he fell last Satuiday.
