ARRESTS BY RUSSIAN IN BERLIN OPPONENTS OF “FUSION” LONDON, July 18. The Russians in Berlin have issued a statement explaining that a Social Democrat named Loewenthal, who disappeared on July 2, is in their custody because'he, on his own confession, worked for the Gestapo during the war and was instrumental in handing over to the Gestapo more than 100 anti-Fascists. Reporting this, Reuter’s correspondent in Berlin adds that Loewenthal is known as a strong-opponent of the Russia-sponsored fusion between' the Communists and the Social Democrats. The Russian statement also explained that 'another missing Social Democrat, Scherff, was under arrest. The statement did not explain the reason for this arrest.
