SEAMEN’S STRIKE

60 SHIPS THUD UP ON GREAT LAKES "OTTAWA, May 29. More than 60 vessels are tied up by •the Canadian Seamen’s Union strike against the Great Lakes shipowners for an eight-hour-day. A union spokesman said that arrests of seamen tor absenting themselves from ships had increased to 52. Tension is high at the Great Lakes ports where picket lines are standing fast against sporadic calls by the owners for police assistance. There is no sign of a break in the strike. On the contrary there are indications that it might exteiid to deep-sea ships. The president of the Canadian Steamships Union (Mr. J. A. Sullivan) announced that, striking seamen from Transport Department ships had boon ordered to resume work. The Deputy-Minister of Labour (Mr. MacNamara) said the crews’ action in walking off Government ships was duo to a misunderstanding. The union had not ordered them to strike.
