NEW FERRY SHIP
LAUNCHING OF THE HINEMOA (Rec. 11 a.rn.) LONDON, May 30. The 6900-ton Hinemoa, sister-ship to the Rangatira, which will replace the Maori on the inter-island passenger service, was' christened and launched at Barrow-on-Furness today by Mrs. N. S. Falla, widow of Brigadier Falla, a former chairman and managing director of the Union Steam Ship Company. The Hinemoa 1 is the first large passenger ship to take the water from a British shipyard since the war, and the scene at the launching was in great contrast, to the wartime launchings, which had a minimum of ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Nash were present.
Mr. Nash, at a luncheon following the launching, referred to the ties between New Zealand and the Homeland, and paid a tribute to the men who established and maintained shipping. The Hinemoa is expected to reach New Zealand in time for the Christmas trade.
