PEACE HOPES EBBING
COMMUNIST SUCCESS IN MANCHURIA FORMIDABLE ACTIVITY (Rec. 2.30 p.m.) MUKDEN, May 30. China’s hopes for peace again ebbed when Government dispatches reported that the Chinese Communists had recaptured Anshan and were also erecting a formidable defence barrier on Little Sungari river, south-west of Harbin. More than 20,000 troops led by the Communist General Li ChengHua recaptured Anshan, 52 'miles south of Mukden. Communist forces are also besieging Haichong, an important railway centre 20 miles further south.
The Communists employed Japan-ese-manned artillery. A Government report said the National troops had fallen back into the hills between Anshan and Mukden.
