STRIKE AT WORKS
SLAUGHTERMEN DEMAND HIGHER WAGES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 31. Following a stopwork meeting yesterday about 20 mutton slaughtermen of the Gear Meat Company at Petone presented a demand for the payment of £7 a week net wages until the end of the season. The management said in reply that it was bound by regulation to pay £6 gross a week. As a result the men refused to resume work. Although the mutton season is now tailing off, it is not yet over and usually lasts into July.
