FRANCE’S GRATITUDE FOR ASSISTANCE

(Rec. 12.35 p.m.) PARIS, May 29. No strings were attached to the American loan to France, declared the President, M. Gouin, speaking at a press conference. He added that France had also applied for a loan of £125,000,000 from the new International Bank and had been assured of American support for the request. France, he added, was profoundly grateful for A merican aid. America’s generous gesture in wiping “off the slate” enormous sums owed for war supplies and American credits dovetailed into the French five-year reconstruction and modernisation plan, enabling France again to become a strong partner in world commerce. France, he said, was making an all-out drive to become one of the largest steel producers in Europe. “The war has shown that only nations with a powerful steel output can defend their independence.”
