PACIFIC FLEET
BRITAIN APPOINTS NEW COMMANDER
REDUCTION IN STRENGTH (Roc. 10.45 a.m.) LONDON, April 23.
It is officially announced that ViceAdmiral Sir Danis W. Boyd has been appointed Commander-in-Chief of the British Pacific Fleet in succession to Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser, the appointment to take effect early in June. Prior to this announcement, Sir Bruce Fraser, addressing a Press conference at Shanghai, said he would be relieved soon as Com-mander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet in line with the reduction of naval strength to pre-war standards. He added that his fleet was at present weak, but it would soon be cut by one-third, leaving four cruisers, eight destroyers, two light carriers, 12 escorts and some submarines. “Britain will retain Hong Kong as the fleet base because we have nowhere else to go,” he concluded.
