COMPTROLLER’S RET fREMENT ANNOUNCED

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 23. The Acting-Minister of Customs ’(Mr A. H. Nordmeyer) announced today that Mr E. D. Good, Comptroller of Customs since 1935, will retire on May 31, after more than 42. years service. Mr D.-G. Sawers, chief advisory and investigating officer of the Customs’ Department, is to be appointed to succeed Mr Good. Mr Good joined the Government service in 1904 as a cadet in the Customs Department, Auckland. He was subsequently stationed at the local offices at New Plymouth and Wellington, and for several years was advisory and investigating officer in the head office. He was appointed assistant-comptroller in 1930. In 1935 he succeeded Mr G. Craig as comptroller. Mr Sawers joined the Public Service as a cadet in the Wellington office of the Customs Department in 1910. He served in the forces throughout the first world war, and rejoined the department in Wellington in May, 1919. In 1930 he was transferred to the head office, and was appointed an advisory and investigating officer Suring 1935. In 1938 he was appointed chief advisory and investigating officer. The Minister also announced that Mr T. H. M. Tanner, AssistantComptroller, is retiring on the grounds of ill-health. Mr W H. Fisher, Deputy-Assistant Comptroller, is retiring after more than 41 years’ service.
