CANTERBURY a Master Dash. Wins Brilliantly

Great Easter Handicap at Riecarton

[SPECIAL TO "STAR.”]

CHRISTCHURCH, April 22.

Master Dash maintained his prerace favouritism for the Great Easter Handicap and justified his position by a meritorious win, thus repeating his success in the race two years ago. Pensacola was in front passing the half mile but the West Coast owned Dinky Di was first into the straight from Donegal Bay, Pensacola, Master Dash, and Da Vinci with Leigh Barton, Derene and Bruce close up. The leader was done with commencing the final furlong, and Donegal Bay, Master Dash, Da Vinci, and Bruce became most prominent. Master Dash completed his difficult task of holding off the fast-finishing Bruce to win by a length, with Da Vinci a close third, a length in front of Donegal Bay. Then followed Leigh Barton, Dinki Di, Martial Note, Juriste, Grand Forest and Derene, with Pensacola in last place. The final stages of the Sockburn Handicap were confined to the first four on the card who also provided the favourite division. Lance Wing was the early leader and was still in charge entering the straight from Double Cross, Al-Sirat and Findon, with Signal Officer, who was one of the last away, moving up from the rear. Al-Sirat drew out from Lance Wing commencing the final furlong; Signal Officer came on the scene with a determined challenge. Al-Sirat was, however, not in any danger. Signal Officer finished very fast and overhauled Lance Wing on the post for second money. Findon, after showing promise a furlong from home, weakened into fourth place, two lengths away, in front of Prize Ring, Double Cross, Big Top, Racket and Authentic. Inquiries An inquiry was held into the handling of Findon by the jockey, G. R. Tattersail. After hearing evidence, the stewards decided that Tattersail’s explanation be accepted and that no action be taken.

After a protracted inquiry, both on the course and at the club’s office in the evening, the judicial stewards of the Canterbury Jockey Club decided that they were not satisfied that there was sufficient evidence to justify a finding that Signal Officer was not run on his merits in the Sockburn Handicap; but they considered that the jockey, R. J. Mackie, made a serious error of judgment .in his handling of the horse after passing the false rail.

The track was in excellent order and provided perfect going. The totalisator handled £143.090/10/- against £132,354/10/- last year, the previous record for an autumn day. Results:—
