Successful Meeting at Greymouth

Westland Handicap to Paddy Potts V Outstanding features of the Grey-mouth-Westland trotting meeting at Victoria Park, Greymouth, yesterday were the successes of Paddy Potts in the, principal event, and Lord Peterson in the main sprint, the double victory of Belle Header in the unhoppled trotters’ races, and the totalisator investments of £24,295 for the day, which represented an increase of £38581- on the at the corresponding meeting last year. Having his first start since he ran second to Kapai in the chief event at the Kaikoura meeting at Rangiora last month, Paddy Potts led practically all the way in the Westland Handicap yesterday, and staved off a strong challenge in the straight from the South Canterbury-ti ained Justify to win nicely. The win favourite, Tony Grattan, was in the van throughout, but the best he could do was fourth. The place favourite, Rose Volo (coupled with Scottish Actress), was a fair third, after having no luck in the running. Paddy Potts and Justify were first out from Tony Grattan and with half a mile to run Paddy Potts was making the pace from Lord Peterson, who ran very wide on the run out of the straight, Justify, Tony Grattan, and Scottish Actress, with Rose Volo in on the fence and Surrey Park next. There was little change in the order going down the back oi across the top except that Lord Peterson dropped right out. Paddy Potts was first to turn for home from Tony Grattan, Scottish Actress, and Justify, all in close order, with Rose Volo putting in an appearance. Paddy Potts stayed on under pressure and won nicely from Justify, with Rose Volo five lengths away ahead of Tony Grattan, Scottish Actress, and Surrey Park. Bohemian, Mona Palm, and Wee Jack were very slow away, and Rose Volo also lost ground.

Won Easily. After showing speed but failing to stay the mile and five furlongs ot the principal event, Lord Peterson finished brilliantly over the last thie furlongs of the final event the Au|, Revoir Handicap, and, hitting the i front 75 yards from the post won ■ easily. Scottish Actress led into the . straight from Real Nugget, with Lord Peterson coming fast on the outside, , and Rose Volo tucked in on the rails behind the leader. Rose Volo secured a run on the fence, but had no chance with Lord Peterson. Scottish Actress hung on for third just i ahead of the fast-finishing Dawn Grattan and Northern Lass. The ic mainder were well back. The lax ourite, Justify, failed badly. Cue won his second race within week when he showed brilliant speed : to outclass the Eclipse Handicap . field. He was rather slow to strike • his hopples and with a quarter of a mile covered was in seventh place, the leader being Motto from Mavis ■ Grattan, Admiration, Mark Way, Prince Lytton and Hanover Mavis Grattan led into the last half from Prince Lytton and Cue, with Hanover and Admiration next. May s Grattan soon cried enough, and Cue turned for home ahead of P ™^' e j Lytton, with three lengths to Hanover and five to Admiration. Cue won easily from Prince Lytton, with Hanover a fair third. Admiration, Mavis Grattan, Reckless Lady, and Loyal Peg were next to finish. With six furlongs to go Derbyshire broke , and came down, interfering with Veritas and Mark Way, but all were . fairly well back at the time. Locally Trained. Prince Lytton, trained by J. CMcClure at Greymouth, finished brilliantly in the centre ot the trackfrom fifth at the straight entrance to win the Easter Handicap at doubk - figure odds right on the post fiom the warm favourite, Cue. The ear y leader Veritas, was still m fiont as they swung into the home stretch from Cue, Reckless Lady, and Han over, with Prince Lytton back on the fence. Cue and Veritas were fi&h ing out a hard finish, and just as Cue gained the upper ha nd, Prmce Lytton appeared with a brilliant and he just snatched victory on the cost from Cue, with Veritas threebarters of a length away third and Reckless Lady a good fourth. Th there was a gap to Hanover, and Mavis Grattan was the next to finish. Checkmate, owned by the former West Coaster, Mr. H Steel, won his first race when he got up in the la.> few strides of a punishing finish to beat Golden Game in the Richmond Handicap. Going into the as ■. Golden Game . was followed oy Symetra, Dawn Patrol,. Rowandale, Betty Ducrow, and Travis Boy, with Checkmate, who lost ground at the ctart next. Checkmate went up fast going down the back and across the fon and was second into the straight behind Golden Game, with Symetra, Rnwandale Sure Glow, Betty DuX i Travis Boy all in a bunch. Golden Game and Checkmate had a Sent tussle all the way down the straight and Checkmate got in the S Stride to win by a head. c v metra was six lengths back thud,, an? was followed by Travis Boy, Rowandale and Sure Glow. Golden Game made amends for he? narrow defeat in the Richmond Handicap when she won the Autamn Ha d ndiC Mou“ata IM Hall entered the sfralglrt on teiis, with Golden Game S 1 fast Symetra was next and S the only other with a ; chance. Golden Game came on to win nicely ■c rvnn Cvmetra who finished well to £?TraX Boy by a neck. Mountain Dell was a good fourth, and the next to finish were Sure Glow, Rowandale, who lost a good position when he broke early, and Diuiy Lane, who broke at the start. Good Trotting. Belle Header justified the public rnnfidence in her by a decisive win in the Rimu Handicap. She began trail with Walter Jingle from 24yds behind and passing the stand atter five furlongs they were together, xennt from Compris, with six, lengths to Monitress, who broke badly at the start, Loyal Flier, and Appreciate. Walter Jingle broke in the back stretch the last time, surrendering the lead to Belle Header, who turned for home clear of Monitress, who

was coming fast, with a gap to Walter. Jingle and Compris. Belle Header stayed on to win by a length and a half from Monitress. Walter Jingle was a fair third, well ahead of Compris, and Appreciate and Loyal Flier were next. In spite of a penalty of 24 yards for her win earlier in the day, Belle Header completed a double in the Otira Handicap, in which she got up in the last stride to win.by a nose from the favourite, Monitress. Belle Header made a forward move down the back and across the top the last time, and came into the straight on terms with Monitress, with Beethoven close up. Monitress and Belle Header had a great tussle aH the way down the straight, and Belle Header just poked her nose in front on the post. Beethoven also finished well but was four lengths away third. There was then a gap to Loyal Flier and Appreciate, with the rest of the field well beaten. The weather was ideal, the track was fast, and there was a large attendance. Detailed Results.
