GENERAL NEWS YOUTHS SHOOT AT ZOO ANIMALS

Two youths over the Easter week-’ end adopted the Newtown Zoo, Wellington, as their own private game reserve, firing at horses and goats. No animals, however, were hit. It is stated that the youths fired over the head of one of the keepers when he found them making pot shots at some horses kept on the zoo property. The youths then took to their heels. They were also observed sharp-shooting in the goat paddock. While these two youths were taking shots at goats and horses three young men tried to drop large rocks on to the Polar bears, but fortunately the rocks fell clear of the bears. The keeper seized these three men, but they escaped. It is stated that the police have the matter in hand. —(P.A.) Missing Man Located. Missing from his home in Dobson since April 11, Mr. Francis Dobell, aged 36 years, an accountant, has been located by' the ,police. Mr. Dobell, Avho is a repatriated prisoner of Avar, had been employed in the Dobson locality for only a short time.

Railway Goods Transport. Owing to the suspension of goods traffic during the Easter holidays, only 3,809 tons were railed from West Coast to Canterbury last week. This is the smallest amount forwarded since the first week in January. In the corresponding Aveek z of last year, 15,474 tons Avent forward and in the corresponding week of 1944, a total of 15,754 tons was transported.

Auckland Power Supply. . Although a considerable saving of electricity is still necessary, it was announced this morning that there would be no cut-out at Auckland today. If possible the Power Board will make no further cuts pending the return of the businessmen’s deputation Avhich is going to Wellington to-morrow to confer with the Minister of Works, Mr. Semple, concerning the urgency of the power position.— (P.A.)

Sealing at Kumara. Representations made to the Minister of Works, Mr. Semple, for the tar-sealing of the highway between Kumara and Dillmanstown, have been met with an assurance that provision will be made for the sealing of about 50 chains through Dillmanstown in this year’s estimates. This information has been forwarded by the Minister of Transport, Mr. O’Brien, who added that the road for one mile east of Kumara required reconstruction and regrading, but sealing was not considered necessary at the present time as there were no dwellings adjacent.
