HOKITIKA OKARITO AS PORT

SILVER PINE SHIPMENTS CONSIDERED

Okarito harbour has again been considered as an outlet for the timber of South Westland. Directors of the South Westland Shipping Company visited the port on Sunday to consider the possibilities of the m.v. Gael transporting several thousand silver pine posts from Okarito to the North Island. The Hokitika harbourmaster (Mr. G. Howe) took soundings which showed that the water at'the wharf and its approaches would be insufficient to float the Gael, though the bar may be workable. Unless a wharf is erected in the main stream, near Mr. N. Friend’s farm, there appears no prospect of any trade from the poi t of Okarito.

GOLF CLUB SCORES The best scores in the medal match played by the Hokitika Golf Club during the week-end were as follows: R. Hill 100, 36 —64; W. Dwan 99, 30— 69: Hay 96, 22 —74; Breeze 110, 36 — 74- James 89, 14—75; Black 114, 36— 78- Wells '94, 16—78; H.
