ANZAC DAY

ARRANGEMENTS MADE FOR GREYMOUTH DAWN PARADE AT CENOTAPH The principal Anzac Day commemoration service in Greymouth on Thursday next will be the usual combined function in the Town Hall at 2 p.m., but a new feature will be a Dawn Parade of returned servicemen, timed to take place at 6 a.m. The men will parade at the Drill Hall and will march to the Cenotaph, where a brief ceremony will be held at 6.15. An Anzac dedication will be read by the president of the Greymouth Returned Services’ Association, Mr. O. McLean, and a wreath will be placed on the memorial for the association. The “Last Post” will then be sounded, and after a minute’s silence, a verse of remembrance will be read by the Rev. T. G. Campbell. “Reveille” and a roll of drums will complete the service. Roman Catholic returned servicemen will attend a Requiem Mass at St. Patrick’s Church at 9 a.m. At the combined service in the afternoon the principal address will be given by the Rev. N. Clarke, of Ahaura. The Rev. P. Kirkham will be chairman, and the Rev. W. S. Brettell will lead the congregation in prayer. After the Town Hall service the parade of returned servicemen will march to the Cenotaph in Tainui street, where wreaths will be placed on the memorial for the citizens of Greymouth. A wooden cross will be ■laid at the Cenotaph and citizens will be invited to place poppies in the cross. The annual Anzac concert will be held in the Regent Theatre in the evening. RECORD SALES OF POPPIES AT GREYMO(JTH The annual Poppy Day appeal by the Greymouth branch of the R.S.A., on Thursday was highly successful, the record sum of £232/6/8 being collected, which was £27 more than last year’s total. The branch executive, to-day, expressed appreciation of the response to the appeal by the people of Grey- . mouth, with special thanks to the women who canvassed the town selling poppies.
