SIR CYRIL AND LADY NEWALL LEAVE TRIBUTE TO NEW ZEALAND (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 19. The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, accompanied by Lady Newall and their two daughters and staff, left New Zealand in the Rimutaka when she sailed from Wellington at 10 p.m. on Thursday. An informal ceremony was held in the ship’s lounge just before sailing time, at which the chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board (Mr -W. H. Price) presented Sir Cyril Newall with an album of photographs of Wellington harbour and the wharves. The guests included the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers) (who will act as administrator until the arrival in June of Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Freyberg, V.C., the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser), members of the Cabinet, the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom (Sir Patrick Duff) and Lady Duff, diplomatic and consular representatives, heads of churches, heads of the services and the Mayor of Wellington (Mr W. Appleton), and local body and Government officials and their wives.

After the presentation, a toast to the health of Sir Cyril Newall and Lady Newall was honoured and all joined in singing “Auld Lang Syne.” “Superb Record” “To have served New Zealand during the last five years as a direct representative of our beloved King, whose magnificent example and service to his people fortified us all throughout the dark years of the war, has been a great honour and a truly wonderful experience which is given to few,” said the Governor-General, in his farewell speech on Thursday evening. “The record of New Zealand in every phase and theatre of the war was superb and has rightly won the admiration and gratitude of the whole Empire and all freedom-lov-ing peoples. “The world is now faced with an aftermath of appalling suffering, the imminence of grave famine and countless deaths from starvation in many countries. Inspired by their national courage, endurance, and sacrifice throughout the war, I am confident that the people of New Zealand will again unite in the service of humanity to defeat this new and devastating enemy and to help in every way that lies within their power those less fortunate than themselves. The need is vital and will brook no delay. “We wish our successors every happiness. General Sir Bernard Freyberg, that great commander and gallant warrior, will be with you in New Zealand about the middle of June, and I know what a rousing welcome you will give to him and Lady Freyberg, who is also highly esteemed and well known to many of you. “To all peoples of all races, in this fair land and its island territories I say once more on behalf of Lady Newall, my family, and mysdlf: ‘Thank you. Thank you for all the many acts of kindness, courtesy, and consideration which we have so deeply appreciated. Thank you, too, for you many letters and telegrams —wonderfully kind messages— and for all your good wishes which we are happy and honoured to carry away with us as we leave this beautiful Dominion and her loyal people., Good-bye and good luck to you all.’' Administrator Appointed The appointment of the Chief Jus-, tice), Sir Michael Myers) as admims( trator of the Government of New Zealand was formally announced in 'an extraordinary Gazette issued today.
