HOKITIKA "DISGRACEFUL CONDITION” OF STREETS

PROGRESS LEAGUE LETTER At the monthly meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council, a letter was. received from the Hokitika Progress League, pointing out the “disgraceful, condition.” of the streets and recommending the installation of rubbish baskets. The league also volunteered its full support of the council in the building of a new town hall, theatre, and council chambers, stating that it considered the present building both a- menace and a disgrace. The letter was received. Cr. C. Caliari presided at the meeting in the absence of the Mayor (Mr. A. R. Elcock). Others present were Crs. D. Pettigrew, S. G. Havill, S. G. Roberts, L. S. Ross, A. C. Armstrong, H. C. Peart, and I. J. Preston.

The treasurer stated that receipts for the month amounted to £123 19/- and expenditure £953/1/3. Accounts amounting to £1255/5/7 were passed for payment. Metal - Crushing Plant. Mr. Ji A. O’Brien applied for permission to erect a shingle, screening and metal crushing, plant at the top end of. Gibson Quay. He stated that he proposed to supply local bodies, carriers, and the public with crushed metal. —A committee was appointed to investigate and report. The Westland District Progress League appealed for support in raising the sum of £lOO to help in the production of a booklet dealing with the scenic advantages of the West' Coast.—No action was taken by the, council.

The manager of the abattoirs reported that stock slaughtered for the month of March totalled 13 cows, 46 heifers, 48 bullocks, 305 sheep, 51 lambs, 20 pigs, and six calves; condemned, one heifer and one sheep. Fees collected for the month amounted to £93/11/-. Fees for the corresponding month last year were £B3/15/3. Report on Water Supply.

The medical officer of health forwarded the Government analyst’s report on samples of water taken from the borough supply. One sample was from a tap in Livingstone street and the other from the council’s pumping station. The report stated that the sample from the pumping station was of satisfactory chemical composition and that from Livingstone street was satisfactory except for a high figure for oxygen absorbed. Five independent samples revealed no indication of any bacterial contamination of importance to health except, in one instance, where there was a flaw in the domestic water service connection.

The report was. received as satisfactory.
