ROAD TO COAL SEAM

WORK PROCEEDING AT GARVEY’S CREEK FURTHER PROSPECTING Progress has been made with the construction of a new road from the Reefton highway to the site of the recently-discovered coal seam at Garvey’s Creek, and it is expected that it will be open for traffic in May. So far, 70 chains of formation work have been completed and 60 chains have been metalled, while a number of concrete pipes and culverts have been placed. The total length of the road will be one mile and 57 chains. The construction of a bridge with three 40ft spans has yet to be undertaken. While the construction of the road is proceeding, prospecting work is being carried out at the proposed site of the mine itself, and the seam, which is thick and practically vertical, is still being investigated. Coal will not be produced by open-cast methods, and it is likely that a drive will be constructed. Work on this will probably be commenced after the completion of the road and bins, which are also being built by the Public Works Department, high priority having been given the job.
