SATURDAY FOOTBALL

RUNANGA LEAGUE CLUB’S SUPPORT CHANGE FROM SUNDAY Support for Rugby League football being played on Saturdays instead of Sundays as at present was voiced at the annual meeting of the Runanga Rugby League Football Club held on Monday evening, and the club’s delegates to the League Centre were requested to support the proposal at the annual meeting of the centre. Opening the discussion, the club’s coach, Mr. N. Griffiths, said that he saw no reason why Saturday football should not be played. Most of the players were now idle on Saturdays and, with shops closed, he thought the change would be beneficial to the code.

It was unanimously agreed that the club support the proposal. The club also decided, upon the motion of Mr. T. Merriman, to support a proposal to play a senior reserve competition in the place of the ordinary junior competition. The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron, Mr. E. W. Kennedy; president, Mr. L. Hunter; secretary, Mr. J. Quinn; treasurer, Mr. T. Merriman; vice-presidents,’ Messrs J. Forrest, H. Morgan, P. Goulding, J. Ryan, K. Henderson, W. Dudson, P. Low, G. Heslin, P. C. Webb, A. Mundy, H. Cox, and R. Blake; committee, Messrs O. O’Connell, R. Dalzell, D. Stephen, J. Newton, J. Fitzgibbons and L. Kennedy; coach and senior selector, Mr. N. Griffiths; senior manager, Mr. J. Fitzgibbons; junior manager, Mr. N. Speakman; custodian, Mr. C. Higson. Mr. L. Hunter, who presided over the meeting, which was well attended, predicted in his report a successful season if the keenness displayed by members was any criterion. He added that the club’s thanks were due to a women’s committee formed during the summer. The balance sheet, showing a satisfactory credit, was held over until the next meeting.
