Mr. J. A. Hutchison advised that he had bought a section in Stafford Street formerly owned by Mr. W. The Secretary, Hokitika Harbour Board, drew the Council’s attention to the precarious state of the northern training wall, the deterioration of which was so rapid that fears for the safety of the town were now entertained, and further, that whole piles were slipping out of position due to excessive scouring. As the heavy expenditure for repairs was beyond the financial means of the local bodies concerned, an approach had been made to Hon. J. O’Brien to seek assistance from Cabinet to have the work undertaken as one of national importance. The Board would be pleased to arrange a visit of inspection by members of the Council so that the Council’s backing would be with the Board in persuading the Government to undertake the work. —Council to support Harbour Board. The Stationmaster, Hokitika, advised in regard to the blocking of Hampden Street with railway carriages, that facilities have now been provided for the cleaning of railway cars adjacent to the station building and that there should be no further cause for complaint.
