The initial award of the Murray Geddes Memorial Prize was made by the New Zealand Astronomical Society at its annual meeting on Saturday to Mr. A. Jones, of Timaru. The prize is intended to encourage interest in astronomy, particularly among younger members of the society, or to be a mark of appreciation of work done on society matters, not necessarily observational, and it may be awarded to non-members. It may be awarded annually. Presenting the prize, which took the form of books, the president (Dr. P. D. Cameron) commended Mr. Jones’s work in the variable star, comet, and meteor sections of the society. This year he had been the first to. pick up the Comet Kopff.—P.A.
