Miss L. J. Boustridge commenced duty this morning on the Telephone Exchange, Greymouth.

Mr and Mrs D. J. Piner, Runanga, have left for Ashburton, where they will reside.

The death occurred on Saturday at Reefton of Mr Albertus Thomas, formerly a miner at Waiuta. A native of Cornwall, England, he came to Waiuta about 25 years ago, and of latter years contracted miner’s phthisis. He leaves one son, Gordon, of Waiuta.

The death occurred at the Westland Hospital on Saturday of Mrs Syrah Christian, aged 88 years. She resided at Brunner for. many years and more recently at Kanieri. She came to New Zealand about 60 years ago, and is survived by two sons, Mr Charles Hartshorne, of Kanieri, and Mr ft. Hartshorne, of Motueka.

The death occurred yesterday of Mr Thomas Phelan, of Cobden. A native of Australia, he was in his 79th year, and had been a West Coast resident for 62 years. He lost his sight forty-six years ago as the result of an accident at Barrytown. He was single and is survived by his niece, Mrs Thrower, of Levin, and his nephew, Mr John Phelan, of .Ross. The funeral, which will be private, will take place at Karoro Cemetery to-morrow.

Rev. Father J. Curnow, who was recently ordained in Christchurch, celebrated his first Solemn High Mass yesterday at St. Patrick’s Church, Greymouth. Very Rev. Father Long was Master of Ceremonies, Rev. Father Horgan, C.SS.R., Deacon, and Rev. Father Flaherty, Sub-Deacon. The church was full for the evening service when Father Curnow gave Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and blessed the congregation.

A Press Association message from Thames stated that at a large gathering of Freemasons on Saturday, Right Worshipful Brother R. S. Thorburn was presented with an illuminated address on reaching the diamond jubilee of his membership, and also the celebration -of his eighty-fifth birthday. He has been an active member and is responsible for instituting quarterly collections for the Widows and Orphans’ Fund, over thirty years ago. Many congratulatory telegrams were received from all parts of the Dominion. —P.A.
