SALISBURY SPIRE

IN “TENDER STATE” i I LONDON, Nov. 13. ' Salisbury Cathedral’s 404-foot spire, the tallest in England, is two 1 feet out of plumb and it is feared that gales may cause further damage. Mr. W. A. Forsyth, the cathedral’s consulting architect, says that the cathedral stands to-day “in a very tender state.” In 1930 a 100-mile-an-hour gale moved the 300-year-old spire and an appeal for £ 10,000 Cor repairs was made in 1937. The war caused the project to be abandoned. The spire has been one of the chief worries for every Dean of the Chapter for generations. The famous architect, Christopher Wren, put an iron bar round its base, but this has rusted and the bass has crumbled.
