ST. MARY'S PRIZEWINNERS
PRESENTATION OF MEDALS. The presentation of medals to successful pupils of St. Mary’s Scnool, held in St. Columba Hall, yesterday afternoon was preceded by a short, pleasing musical programme. The highlight was a violin solo by P. Robinson, who gave a capable performance. The singing and playing by the ■. other performers was testi-. mony to the efficient manner in which they had been taught.. Father Long congratulated the prize-winners and introduced Miss Eva Card, in memory of whose sister the Harriet Card Medal was .being presented for the first time. It was fitting, said Father Long, that this medal should be given for Christian Doctrine. First things should always be put first and when that had been done everything else fell into its proper place automatically. It had always been the habit of Miss Harriet Card to put first things first and he trusted the girls present would follow her example. The Card family, continued Father Long, had always been esteemed in Greymouth and it was typical of their thoroughness that tires'- brought the medal clown from Featherston instead of sending it. Miss Card replied briefly, thanking Father Long and the Sisters of Mercy for their kindness. She then presented the Harriet Card Medal to Therese McKeefry, the first winner. The afternoon’s programme was as follows: —Chorus, “A Blessing,” St. Mary’s; recitation, “ ’Tisn’t Worth It,” Evelyn Kiely; chorus, “Boatman’s Song,” St. Ursula’s; sextette, “Ave Maria,” “Melodies from Rigoletto,” soloist, P. Robinson. The other players were P. Meldrum, T. McKeefry, M. Gurden, G. Coleman, and R. Morgan. Presentation of medals: Bevilacqua Medal, Maire Murray; second, Mary Walker. Dux Medal, Brenda Guerin; second, Rene Morgan. Harriet Card Medal, Therese McKeefry; second, Kath Dowdall.
The proceedings closed with “A Farewell,” sung by St. Mary’s. A photo of the late Miss Harriet Card, which occupied a place of honour in the hall, was the gift of the Sisters of Mercy, Greymouth, to St. Mary’s School.
